Call me a noob, but I’m totally new to IDM. I only recently got into EDM..
So go ahead and recommend me some IDM, I’ve been listening to some glitch hop lately, and my friend showed me this guy “the flashbulb,” and I think this genre looks real interesting and I wanna know more
I couldn’t find a suitable thread with recommendations, so I figured I’d start one. So go ahead.
EDIT: If there is a thread, link me to it and lock. Thanks.
Yeah, I’ve probably just got a bit of my bee in my bonnet about things such as this. Just like EDM, it could mean loads of different genres: d&b, house, techno, ‘ambient’. It just ain’t descriptive enough. It fails the l_p ‘find out what you’re about to listen to test’:
“So what type of music does he play?”
“EDM”
“Yes, but what type of music does he play?”
“IDM”
“Yes, but what type of music does he play?”
“Glitchy techno, ambient and the occassional bit of terrifying drill’n’bass”
“Mmmm, sounds brilliant”
I meant for it to be somewhat of a broad thing.. particularly I like the glitchy aspect, or things with complicated, involved drum programming, But I do like the selected ambient works 2 so thanks for that tip. Really though, I just want to see what people are listening to as far as this stuff goes.
Here’s a tl:dr, I’ll write up my post again when I have time:
Aphex Twin - Chosen Lords
Boards of Canada
Amon Tobin
Tycho
Wisp (everything is free)
Autechre
Squarepusher
Not really sure why artists wouldn’t want to be labelled by it. I guess some prefer no genre at all. Imo most of this stuff just seems like avant garde electronic music.
I say ‘electronica’, so do my friends. I have never heard the term ‘IDM’.
The last time i heard the word ‘intelligent’ used to describe music was when people started calling some D&B ‘Intelligent Drum & Bass’ just cus it was jazzy and had real musicians playing on it instead of just being arse-tearing ‘Jungle’.
I get it, i really do but personally i think the use of the word ‘intelligent’ to describe a genre of music is incredibly pretentious and actually quite dumb.
Its almost like saying, if you dont like it, then you dont get it cus it’s too intelligent for you.
I can quite understand someone thinking that Boards Of Canada are dreadful and sound like a badly tuned-in radio thats playing songs on the wrong speed. That doesn’t mean they don’t understand it.
Id rather hear someone stumble over words and find it hard to describe what they are listening to than hear them say ‘intelligent’.
btw - no-one ever mentions Waiwan. Total legend based in Manchester in the 90’s (although not from there i dont think).
This is one one my all time favourite tunes… this builds into something truly amazing.
I see what you’re saying, but I just see it as any other grouping of music. I guess it’s rather useless if nobody uses it, but that’s just what my friend told me it was called. I feel like it probably wasn’t meant to be interpreted that way, but then again what do I know Nice tune anyways
