“The format of the 2010 DJ Championships will not be changed, digital equipment as normal will be permitted in the Team Championships ONLY. The format of the Battle For Supremacy and solo competition will remain with two turntables and mixer”
Well I guess sharing with people from DJ TT most of you will think that it is foolish to not even allow DVS in the battle and solo competitions in 2010!. If i were running the competition I would say that you must have turntables but anything else goes..DVS, add on controllers etc. As long as you still have the old school elements of scratching their why can’t you make the competition even more creative??? We all seen the cool routines from Native Instruments with turntables and an X1..
Because than it wont be the same. They didnt have 808´s back than allowed to incorporate into the mix, or keyboards. Why should they allow dvs now? Everyone is allready using dubplates, no need for DVS imo.
I think its a good thing they focus on 2 turntables and a mixer only i think. And its the DMC, they are the elite
yeah, i agree with them as well. not that theyre afraid of new tech, but they want the contest the same way it has been before. a lumberjack cant bring a chainsaw to an event that requires an axe, eh?
I can see where your coming from. But maybe just a different category for the competition allowing any set up. Sure keep the vinyls and a mixer but just be more open.
To me watching someone scratch and beat juggle and add effects just adds more competition.
As in almost any competition consistency in standard equipment is essential for a level playing field and judging criteria. The decision makes a lot of sense to me.
Yeah, I think the DMCs are about turntables and vinyl. That said, it isn’t completely accurate that no controllers or DVS are allowed. They’re just not allowed in the solo events. The team events allow them.
While I personally feel that controllers are going to take over the bulk of the DJ market, I also feel that the DMC contests are judging a certain skill set. To try and introduce “digital” elements into that would complicate judging. How much of the performance is on the artist, and how much of it is on the equipment? It would be like a photoshop artist trying to enter a painting competition.
Instead of forcing the DMCs to accept controllerists, there should be a controllerist only competition.
I agree with this statement. Turntablism is an art form that should continue to have it’s own place in music. That doesn’t preclude controllerism from having it’s own place, as well.
well its a competion that exist since 1985 …they builded an empire on something solid and for that particular time. but now things evolve and i dont think they will change what they build and to keep the title as clean and hard to obtain as possible. Anyway i never got interested in those kind of stuff…most of the time its dosent even sound good. Its all about marketing and money now.
What is it that bruce lee says about style? “each style has their own doctrine, and the doctrine became the gospel truth which you cannot change”
This topic is interesting because of the dmc people attitudes towards controllers. Just ask anyone from dmc and “like a fat kid who swears he has a gland problem when asked about his weight while you can see the empty donut box by his bed”, they will oh so wryly reply, “what’s a controller?” to wit, you’re left to think, “really, you’re the torch barrer for djing skills, and you say that bs!” it’s like watching that documentary about the pro skater"gator" who basically lost his mind because his sport changed all around him and he couldn’t learn to do a kick-flip. Let the dmc do whatever they want, much of the competetion is un-inspired and lackluster anyways, with little soul or innovation. i’m glad that they are so adamantly refusing to get involved in some separate but equal types of competitions, it leaves the door open for something new to take place.
I like the idea of qualifiers with specific sets of equipment. Vci100, 300, anything. Then let the winners from those groups go against each other.
I’m no turntablist or even a great lover of turntablism, but I can see the logic here. Karlos’ Olympic analogy is correct. They could have another category for DVS/controllerism though.
Turntablism / Scratching is the shit. My setup will always include a turntable / fader so I can scratch, it’s a staple skill of any good DJ imo.
That being said, controllers are the shit. I think anyone who dismisses either is missing out. Reap the benefits of everything and bend it to your will
I’d love to see an Olympics where steroids were allowed. Imagine the 100 meters run in 3 secs by some mutated roided up athlete with massive legs and a tiny body and head…
