[dumb ?] electro or electro house? naming a remix?
I read on another blog that someone said electro and electro house are two different things. said person is frustrated by remixes that are named electro since he states that ended in the late 80’s, and labeling a remix the electro remix insults the dj’s intelligence.
i think this person is splitting hairs and its all good. when i shopped at record stores in the 90’s i saw so many micro genres like funk-trance and speed-garage that is all a blur to me now. putting adjectives at the end of a remix name is funny like erik’s ghetto breaks rinse.
i remember using the word ‘electro’ in the late 90’s to compliment someone dropping a Kraftwerk album cut in the middle of their set.
is said person sweating the small stuff? or am I showing my ignorance?
In my opinion just sweating the small stuff. I still find it hard to get my head around different sub genres and what people call things. What people called something years ago may be called something different now, electro 10 years ago is different to electro today. Just like hip hop is different today than 10 years ago. Does not mean it really needs a different label.
Interesting topic though
Electro is a very different thing from electrohouse and furthermore it’s still being made today so what matey said about it being finished by the late 80s isn’t true either.
Doesn’t all this pigeon holing piss everyone else off as much as it pisses me off?
It’s just creating genres at will just to create new ‘trends’ to generate music industry money. Most music can easily be categorised into at most about 10 genres. There’s totally no need for all this sub-genre nonsense.
All it’s good for is to make pretentious people a bit more obvious to all us non-pretentious types! Anyone who says “yeah man, I love that psychedelci-trance-rock stuff” needs a good slap with a big wet fish!
That and to make Sony, WB and co shedloads of money of course! I can imagine Sony and WB with little factory type places with little oompaloompas generating new buzzwords and genres at will for Sony and WB to push out into the mainstream.
ok, the current score tied, 2.5 for splitting hairs - 2.5 for ignorance. @happydan, i appreciate the links! previously, i would have called the first one ‘breaks’ and the second one ‘mainstream club’. neither sounded like electro to me.
im going to make a shortlived genre called ‘speed-electro’ by pitching up Skrillex tracks +12, and making mix cds. (ala chopped n skrewed)
The beat in that BLIM track is an electro beat. What do you think of as electro djerikt?
Bunford: This thread isn’t about subgenres, electro is an actual genre like house, hiphop or disco. But it’s not the majors who come up with new genres, new genres tend to come from journos and the ‘underground’ scene.
@Bunford:
We need genres classifications to wade through the sheer volume of music released daily. Without some form of whittling, it would be impossible.
i found a comment on youtube about 3 years ago which helped me understand the genres a bit better. it was something like:
electrohouse is um-ch-sh-ch
house is um-ch-um-ch
techno is um-ss-um-ss
and hardcore is um-um-um-um
those would be the genres, along with trance and psy, that i tend to use and base stuff on, though i claim to spin ‘minimal and progressive’ apparently beatports definition is a bit different to mine as what progressive is, because i deem it stuff thats put out by bedrock etc, and played by sasha, digweed, nick warren and the like. I bring up progressive and i get Toolroom and a LOT of trance… confuses me from time to time. and what beatport deems tech-house and what it deems minimal are very similar, i cant tell the difference in half the cases. pigeon-holing things like that only ends in confusing others…
