Logic Pro 9 or Ableton live

Logic Pro 9 or Ableton live

Sup DJTT what would you say is the best bang for your buck. I can get ableton for $270 due to student pricing or logic for the full price of $500 basically money isn’t too much of an issue but I just wanna know what you guys would go for. I know the saying “it’s not the DAW it’s the user” and I agree with it fully but I hate the idea that logic doesn’t have VST support. p.s. I wanna make hard hitting electro e.g. DJ Antention, Haezer, The Oddword thanks guys
TLDR. Logic pro 9 or ableton

My view is that ableton is best for creating and getting down your ideas really quick. Logic is more of an allrounder and better for mixing down than ableton. I prefer to write in ableton and mixdown in pro tools, thats just me though.

sweet thats what I want because I can come up with idea’s easily I just need to be able to get them down quick otherwise I lose them. hey have you tried out tose retrosynths that come free? are they any good?

i got them both on education pricing, i must say that i prefer ableton more but logic is more bang-for-your-back with its included instruments and sound packs, the 80GB installation is a monster!

so from the sounds of it albeton is funner to use and is more intuitive??? i have this feeling though with logic that I wont use any loops or what not as I have downloaded the drum samples I believe I may only use.

Can’t you get student pricing on Logic? They sell it for under $200 as I recall. I think Logic 8 studio set me back $140. However … I don’t use it much, heh. I like Ableton better for playing around with ideas, and I really don’t do much beyond that. But what I love about Logic (and what I wish Live would copy) is the loop browser. It makes it so easy to find loops and samples.

The loops and samples in logic (pro 8 anyway) are crap and not worth considering as a deal breaker. Maybe they’re better in pro 9?
I wish id got into live from the start as im so used to logic i cant really change now, but its a pain in the ass for a lot of things. Editing can be really fiddly. But again im using pro 8, so maybe alot has changed now.

Kind of like Serato vs Traktor… If there were a right answer, one of these apps wouldn’t exist.

ha I never thought of it like that, thanks man.

So true.

The logic software instruments and the mastering suite are in my opinion much better than the ableton built in plug-ins but if you intend to get something like the native instruments komplete 7/8 then it won’t matter as you won’t use the instruments anyway

On the other hand I really like the workflow in ableton more than logic 9 , but then again maybe that’s just personal preference

I don’t think they’re bad at all but it’s meant to be a background library; if you have specific sample needs you pretty much have to look for specific collections. What I really like though is the browser itself. The way of finding stuff in Ableton is about as good as clicking through folders in your hard drive.

well i bought ableton live EDU last night and am waiting for my student verification (the pictures of my student ID and learners permit didn’t attach last night) so I should hopefully have it sorted tomorrow night, I gotta say it looks hell different to fruity loops but hey it’s nothing I can’t figure out. thanks for the input guys.

Hehe I was in the same boat, I actually thought I was going to buy Logic for sure, I ended up buying Ableton and for me it’s harder to use (as of right now at least) but as I am learning the program things seem to come easier to me and it seems simpler to use. The work flow seems more fun to me as well now.

The only difference between us is I picked up the regular Ableton Suite 8 instead of the EDU version even though I am a student because from what I read you can’t upgrade the EDU versions of any of these DAWS :O.

This one is for the quote thread.

Yeah I would worry about not being able to update but I’m going to SAE and get ableton live, Logic and a MBP 15" for $500 anyways

id say ableton purely from a performance aspect

I’d vote Ableton for now too, though mainly because Logic is getting really long in the tooth and I have a feeling we’re going to see a massive redesign/rewrite in the near future. Similar to how Final Cut was recently upgraded.

Probably better to wait and see what Apple does before jumping in that ship.

I use both apps daily though, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask away.
