Pioneer - Dawn of a new Species

judging by zabiela’s comment about getting away from the laptop - i doubt it somehow.

I think i’ve concluded (until they bring out “dawn of a new species: round 3, Carl Cox”) that they’re just high end CDJ 400s. I mean come on - they can’t have come up with any groundbreaking technology to revolutionise DJing for the better… and Phaidon, I’m feelin you there!

it also just occured to me - would anyone here ever take someone’s USB pen with their latest production on, mid-set and play it out? surely that would be a horrible idea!

I’m all for the advancement of technology, but I’m not sure this is the way forward.

There seems to be a big ‘not looking at the laptop screen’ thing going on..

DJ’s don’t stare at the laptop screen pointlessly.. its because its got some info on it they need at the time. And just like any performer, they have to remember to keep connected to the crowd, whatever medium they use to play out.

Plus… given that this thing is undoubtedly gonna cost a fortune.. you may as well just have a laptop and hid/midi controller(s).

4 sure it will be a sort of CDJ-1000 with CDJ-400 feat.s plus de database reading capabilities, expect to read from usb aswell.

The Screen should be lots better than current models & with more info, so should be the navigation thru a track (wave display), track or folders … easier and more “visual”.

Fisically there shouldn’t be that much different from current top models!

I wouldn’t be surprised if in some near future the CDJs or newer models don’t use any CD/ DVD mechanism.

Good point about the looking at the screen issue… BUT I have to agree that we need as much visual cue from the decks/ mixer as possible… I feel that TR-1 by vestax is way better that and odd controller that I can configure to do what ever I need, mainly because it feels natural, if I look at it I know almost exactly everything what’s going on.. just like a set of decks+mixer…
I mean if the sounds cuts mid-set what do look immediately ?? CDJ/ TT, then mixer channel, levels etc… so you still need that sort of almost “subliminal” info!

Cheer,

This is really bugging me now because I want to go out and buy traktor but feel I should wait for this.

Here’s my guess:

It will come with some sort of itunes software that allows you to manage and create set’s/crates from your tracks. These are then exported to either a USB, cd or directly pulled from your laptop via usb (the laptop screen could be closed for this as long as its still running).

Midi will be via USB and clocked to something like ableton if required (the cdj as the master).

I dont think the cdj screen will link to software like traktor or ableton as I cannot see how this would be possible.

I dont think a hard-drive will be included, probably just a large amount of RAM to dump the sets/crates in from the USB/CD/Laptop. Plus I imagine there would be an issue of people stealing tracks left on club cdjs.

Suppose we will just have to wait and see!

My bet would be an usb connection so you easily can plug in your own USB drive (where your music is sorted the way you want it) and then decode the songs to the player.

I would be really impressed if this truly was something ground breaking, but I have a gut feeling that tells me that this will be a huge flop and probably the end for pioneer as the leader of the pack out at the clubs. In my mind the only “club standard” in the future will be a mixer with an integrated sound card, unless someone creates a really kick ass controller that works with both traktor/serato and ableton.

  1. Better LCD screen
  2. SD to store MP3/Cue Points/Loops
3 USB to hook up external HD

Im psychic damn it!

I am still thinking a single deck CDJ equivalent of the numark NS7.

videos 3 & 4…how much are they paid by pioneer ??! ^^

These videos are really starting to annoy me now as I just know that nothing can live up to this hype!

Its definitively think its going to have some sort of management software as so many people are barking on about organizing samples/tracks/loops etc. I dont see how this could be possible by using just a small screen on a cdj.

Exactly. I dont think I would be surprised if MJ done the last video!!!

Dead King of Pop or living basketball legend?

I don’t think there will be MUCH difference here…

A lot of HYPE if you ask me.

I think all that will be added is that you will be able to link your harddrive or it has an internal HHD.

a few more controling features…and thats IT!

Yeah I watched the interviews and it sounds like a cdj that is used like a controller… but with/without a computer… so its like… a controller with a built in computer… that you still need to attach to your computer. Well. Hmm.

seriously if the product is that good the hype isn’t really necessary, actually I take that back, there are too many dumb wankers who can’t think for themselves and only know what makes you legit. Rather it is unfortunate that these ads will be reflected in the price as I doubt that these videos come cheaply.

The stuff is almost all there already in the form of a CDJ400 … USB conection (I think the future might bring lan conection between devices like mixers/ cdjs.. a bit like the mlan which unfurtunately never took off, this will share settings, hdd devices and make all “audio connections”), db reading… don’t think pioneer will ever have rotating platers …

Lossless Audio connections
But that would be really ace if they would’ve used some better connectors! My LAN connectors always break :disappointed:

check out the pictures here, you can see teh unit with the big screen i predicted and what looks like maybe a media card reader at the front. Looks to small for cds i think … or maybe its just the angle of the shot.

that picture has been floating around for a while now

ahh really … i’d never seen that one til today, just the interview with JZ

So I see Paul Woolford has done the latest video for the “new species”. This got my attention as Mr Woolford is an absolute hero of mine.

Pioneer really are unloading against the competition as you can tell his comments are aimed towards traktor and serato (amongst other software based systems). Slating both the sound quality and the flexibility when taking over from a dj (which in all fairness is a pain).

This is another pointless post I know as we can only speculate what the end product may be. I just think Pioneer will have burned many bridges if they get this wrong.
