Quick DDM4000 question
The headphone plug looks like it’s in a really annoying position, one that would cause the lead to hang over the lower right half of the mixer.. does it?
Yeah, it does that. But it’s in the same spot as on the Pioneer mixer which you find in most clubs. So it’s common to run into that problem. There are right-angle headphone adapters, though. They lift your lead a little
Not really.. In the pio 800 it’s in the very bottom left with literally zero chance of that happening. What mixer are you thinking of? I can’t imagine why they’d put it in such an inconvenient spot, pretty much turning me off buying one. Do you use the ddm4000?
Yeah that has pretty well put me off buying one of those even though people say for the buck it an awesome mixer. One solution may be to get a short extension and a right angle headphone adapter. Then you could plug the extension into the adapter and tape it up along the side of the mixer. Yeah it’s a rig job, but your getting the mixer for cheap anyway.
Hey man,
I personally love the DDM4000. Amazing mixer for how much it costs.
With regards to the headphone jack, I have never had any problems.
I just had the headphone line coming off the side of the mixer, and thus it doesn’t cover the controls.
I run my headphone cable up to the back of the mixer, and then back down the side of the mixer next to my 1200. Works fine.
But yeah. STOOPID place for a headphone socket.
I assume you mean you hinge the lead a bit at the end of the jack? What’s the chance of that damaging the wiring in the cord? Good to see you can get around it though.
Care to convince me any further in buying one? Obviously the price is the main point, on ebay at the moment a ddm4000 is pretty much the same as a pio 400 which is crazy. I do love the idea of having more midi options on the mixer for Traktor - and according to some reviews much better midi control than a pio 800.
I think my only criticism so far after a bit of research (other than the headphone jack) would be the tiny buttons they’ve used to toggle sample length. And how about the low profile square buttons in general for performance?
I’d also be interested to know if there’s much difference in bpm reading between the ddm4000 and traktor if anyone uses the two? I know traktor isn’t renowned for it’s reliability for bpm detection.
Thanks for the input!
another question, i’m looking to buy a midi controller for starting to dj - do i need anything else (as in external soundcard) to use the ddm with Traktor? and with which version of traktor does it come, cant seem to find that on their page ![]()
the ddm looks like a good basis to start and expand on when needed, or did i miss something? ![]()
you need an external soundcard to use it as a midi controller you might also want to pickup a kontrol x1 or something of the like
and maybe an audio 4 if you want to get dvs later on or something. Im thinking of upgrading to a ddm 4000 and 2 x1’s soonish tell us how it goes once you’ve got it sorted
I use the ddm as a pure external audio mixer with two X1s.
The bigass coiled wire on my hd25 always bangs into the high/mid/low switches on either side of the crossfader without me noticing. Which is because I have that part of the mixer disabled (well, midi-enabled which turns the vanilla functionality off), so it doesn’t make a difference ![]()
@zacl87:
The buttons are pish for anything performance related. Don’t worry about the sample length buttons, they probably feel better if only for the size. The bpm detection is good enough for the internal effects but it definitely is not precise. I wouldn’t use it for midi sync and can’t stand using it for the sampler, having to pitch bend the sample all the time. So I gave up on that and just use loops or a slicer in Traktor. Ergo sample length buttons == not a problem.
As for bpm precision, Traktor does it much better with only a simple track analysis and is spot on if you’ve gridded the tracks well, providing the tracks allow it. If you want to play with bpm synced effects, use Traktor’s.
I mapped most of the ddm for midi once, it’s fun to play around with this way but again due to the feel of the buttons you will want to use other controllers around it to trigger most of your actions and only use the ddm’s for a few one-off things.
for the price, i didnt let the One headphone flaw keep me from buying my ddm4000. I use a curled extension/1/4" adapter anyway, so i comes out of view at the middle-right of the mixer.. so my problem is solved.
the sample buttons are much smaller than the square buttons on the rest of the mixer.. but they’re also slightly taller and more tactile. Therefore, better for me as well.
I use my ddm for external mixing and pair it with my Numark Stealth. You need an external sound card still though. I run both channels from my Audio 2 into the ddm, use channel 1 assigned to sampling and i cue from the mixer.
the ddm4000 allows for different section to be assigned as midi and leave the rest as it was. so if you get a midi-to-usb cable you can assign the Mic section for example to control Track Selection or the Sampler to control Loops or whatever.
if getting a 2 channel soundcard, youre good with something like the Audio2, but 4 channels you need the Audio8 dj or Gigaport HD.
Hmm yeah I use some paired controllers and just have a small 2 channel mixer so looking to upgrade. Not that I’d use a lot of the midi on the mixer but bits and pieces would be nice, like a dedicated filter knob in the mic section or something.
Seems to have decent amount of cons, shitty sampling will definitely send me up the wall if it’s as bad as @slangemenneske suggested, something I’d want to use a lot.
The price is a good point but I’m probably at the stage where I’m not keen on upgrading to something I’ll probably be sick of in a year or so.. Don’t quite have djm 800 money floating around though..
Has anyone physically compared the djm800 and ddm? It does seem everyone who owns a ddm is happy with it but they also seem to just be putting up with its pitfalls for the price.. difficult decision.
Say I was only going to ever use two channels, would a ddm still be better than a djm 400? I ask because they’re similar prices and I haven’t gone too deeply into using more than 2 channels, but probably will in the future…
The answer
ok well after reading this and not seeing 1 person suggest the idea that i have been using since i got mine that works great, the only downside is if your headphone cord isnt very long…but anyway 1 WORD… TAPE, the small legs are tall enough to slide the headphones under the mix and have a slack line to pull on perfectly, that way if you got a long cord, its never hanging all over the place. i dont know how this isnt the common solution, but hopefully it will be soon
I’ve even considered taking a small half round file and filing out a groove in the faceplate (pretty much where you’ve got the cable taped) so that the cable can be put in there. I haven’t completely ruled this out yet…
that sounds like an awesome idea, make it so that its a tight fit so it kinda pops in then holds snug, that would be sweet, let me know if u ever get to accually doing it
Great minds think alike ![]()
Since I got my decks in the picture again…and have a VCI to control pretty much everything else except the Faders and EQ’s (Hate that soft take-over) I need a 4 channel mixer for my home studio.
The Organisation i play for now have 2 x CDJ900’s and a DJM800…
I have been using just the VCI and my lappy so far…but would like to plug into their system and use my decks too. So to mirror the setup at home to practice using it all this way…a DDM4000 will do the job i rate.
Been looking at the DDM for a long time now. I don’t like this manufacturer from the gear of theirs i have used in the past…but seeing so many happy users…
I was never interested in its Midi capabilities or FX really…as I just wanted the 4 channels but knew I needed a midi mixer too as I am now mixing digitally.
What can you do with the MIDI? Is it worth using it to control aspects of Traktor my VCI won’t?
Like…can I mix internally with 4 decks using the DDM’s 4 channels without having to route my audio though an Audio8 in each channel?
Or would it be better to route it for external use? I have an Audio4…so will need to upgrade to the 8 for this.
Will I be able to map the deck C and D’s FX banks and transport buttons to the DDM to control?
I have a VCI-100 and pair of turntables and an Audio4.
Will play on their CDJ900’s instead of the decks…using the VCI to control A and B.
Sorry if I am all over the show…but just toked a bifta…and a bit gaft.
Aiit!
would you recommend this setup or would you change if given the chance?
I think about going to the same way as you, but I don’t scratch so I don’t need inputs, audio 8 would be an overkill to me and it is USB too, wich I don’t like…
I’m thinking about M-Audio Profire 610, 8 rca outs (2 or 4 decks), 2 Headphone outs (Yeahhh Double DJs = Double fun), Firewire
So, for me, would be a DDM4000 at home and a DJM800 at club, external mixing with M-audio Profire 610 (2 or 4 decks) and a MIDI controller for the traktor specific commands (I alredy have two korg nanos and a Maudio Oxygen 8 v2, I’m thinking about buying a Stanton SCS.3m for fancy FX controll)…
