Recommend good headphones for DJ’ing / listening to music!
I am looking for some bangin’ good headphones for mainly listening to music / DJ’ing but also watching movies from PC / playing games… so far I have been using SteelSeries Siberia v2 Gaming Headset as my main headphones but now I want my ears to have a taste of better sound quality!
Dunno about my budget but something around 100-200 dollars would be nice? I live in Europe so I mainly use THOMANN for my music gear purchases… here are a few options I have been looking at:
Thousands of topics about headphones, really. Have a look at AIAIAI’s TMA-1. They are a competitor of Sennheiser’s HD-25.
But really, please, do some reseach here on the internet in general, you’ll find everything you need (opinions, detailed specs, tests, etc.)
I have always used Sennheiser HD-25’s. They’re not a “flat” frequency response as such but have always been crystal clear and perfect for DJing. Just about every picture of a professional DJ you see, unless they’re sponsored and so have a contract to use a particuluar brand, have HD-25’s and the same with live sound engineers, film/tv/mobile sound recordists, everyone.
However a very well known sound engineer called Dave “Rat” Levine who works with the likes of the Chili Peppers, Blink 182, Pearl Jam, rage against the Machine etc etc done an exhastive test of about 32 different sets of headphones. He documents it all in a series of Youtube Videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJh8B1QfEn0&feature=related) and a blog posts (The Mighty Headphone Quest Part 7 | Dave Rat - Roadies in the Midst) but the result was that his choice for now is the Dennon AH-D2000 and AH-D5000.
I’m gonna give them a go when I next have to purchase, but as always with these things there is a lot of personal preference. Best best is to get a few tracks on a CD that you know VERY well and know how they should sound, and then try a pile of pairs in a shop. Sound quality is important obviously, as is comfort, fit, durability etc etc and in the end you have to see what works best for you.
Couldn’t recommend the TMA-1’s highly enough but there’s plenty out there with similar sound quality no doubt. Got the Fools Gold ones myself and they’re sweet

They 500’s and 700’s were sony’s first departure into the “DJ headphone” market and at the time did a pretty decent job ------ until the hinges break, which seems a common fault after 2-3 years on both models.
There’s better out there these days for the same money.

The MDR-7506/V6 is more used in Recording studios, Camera Crews, Engineers etc.
but yes the HD25’s are very very nice headphones and are in use by ALOT of industry professionals and are almost as good as you can get.
I’d see if you can demo a few varieties of headphones locally in hifi shops before getting them for 2/3 the price on thomann
i’m in the same situation now..among the 3 choices i’m leaning towards the HDJ-500.
price range almost the same with my Sony V700, but hopefully the HDJ-500 would be less bulkier & lighter…
Also try the Sennheiser hd 280 pro. May be a bit on the big side for DJing, but it sounds very good and it’s certainly perfect for home use. You can wear it for hours and it won’t hurt a bit.
I concur with the Beyer DT770 - excellent sound (not neutral), extremely comfortable and very well built. My favorite coach headphones at a good price - perfect for casual listening. for DJaying - HD 25 II
