I live here in Miami so I’ll be around all week. Have tickets to the first weekend of Ultra, but I’m most likely selling them. Don’t think I can stomach the zombies this year. Wednesday, I’m going to the Nurvous Records pool party at the Shelbourne. Massive lineup. Friday, I think I’ll be heading to that Hard event at Grand Central with Oliver, VonStroke, etc. Sunday, probably going to Villa 221 for the Last Resort event. Gonna be a lot more things going on, but I’m set on those as of now.
Nice… I would say I would check out your event but I will probably be too beat by sunday. Get Lost looks pretty sick- I just got my ticket. I didn’t even realize it starts at 5am saturday morning then goes all through.
Pools are only open from noon until 11pm… some of those venues operate 24 hours a day during conference. There are plenty of good underground daytime parties… just gotta look for them.
Wish I was going this year but can’t foot the expenses; I really broke the bank last year (over $2000 on the hotel room alone - pretty sweet though, right by the beach - $400 WMC all access pass and then ridiculous prices for drinks at every event, and of course the food - plan to spend a fortune on stone crabs alone), not to mention I won’t be able to get as much time off this year. It sure was a nice time - ten days on the beach, wake up, take a swim, walk to an “underground” pool party, dance my ass off till sundown, walk to some “underground” bar parties, stay up way too late carousing, then pass out and do it all again the next day. (Big thanks to haze234 from this forum for taking good care of me when I first got there too!) I’ll miss it but I’ll more than make up for it this year with FQF in New Orleans, DEMF in Detroit, and SONAR in Spain so I’m not too bummed
I avoided the UMF events because they’re too huge, I’m too old, and in most cases I’m not a big fan of the music. And what passes for “underground” at WMC is still pretty big, and even the more underground folks tend to play to the crowd so there’s a bit of an overwhelming sameness to the music after ten days of it. But hell, it’s great stuff to dance to in the sun while surrounded by perfectly tanned 25-yr olds in bikinis, so I wasn’t complaining too much. There was a pretty sweet exhibit at the Miami Art museum about vinyl records that coincided with the event which was kind of nice to check out as well. Oh and be sure to check out the WMC tent if you get a badge; there will be some new tech toys on display and some interesting folks to talk to; there’s also a red carpet event that was an absolute waste of time and a DJ battle that was only slightly less lame, so I’d recommend skipping those.
Be sure to get a copy of “The List” (http://www.thelistwmc.com/); even if you don’t get a WMC badge there are copies at all the nearby venues and stores; it’s a thick little book filled with details about who’s spinning where on each day, prices, etc. And there’s no major reason to get the $400 badge if you don’t have the money; a lot of the events were free (though it does save you waiting in line for some of them, and there were other events with like $100 admissions so it’s worth it if you’re going to stay the full week or two). My favorite events were at a hotel on Ocean street I think between 10th+11th, maybe called the Congress or the Clevelander based on the map. Had a blast at the Shelborne too but I had to leave before the “main events” came on - Ida Engberg and a few others were great there. Dirtybird and Coyote Cuts had some great parties as I recall; I still have my list somewhere and will look for it to see if I can make other useful suggestions. It’s a really great time, and there’s pretty much something for everyone. I even got to DJ one night, but it was totally disconnected from WMC; it was at a small punk-rocky club in south Miami for a crazy burlesque show, coz that’s how I roll…
